Parties in Kurdish National Council Oppose Election Mechanisms in Hasakah

(Zaman Al Wasl)- A number of Kurdish parties and political figures forming the Kurdish National Council objected to mechanisms to elect independent candidates to the council.

Elections for the Kurdish National Council’s 4th conference are expected to take place in two days.

Those opposing the election mechanisms confirmed that the council remains “a prominent representative political body.”

Mohammad Farhan, a member of “The General Coordination for the Kurdish Reform Movement- Syria” said to Zaman al-Wasl, “we are approaching elections for independent candidates to attend the 4th Kurdish National Council conference, but we were surprised 48 hours before the election time with the existence of a previously formed list prepared by the Kurdistan Democratic Party-Syria comprised of three people whose political orientation is known, and they are former members of the Kurdistan Democratic Party’s local council in al-Hasakah.”
Farhan added that the nomination of those, “who the party supports through its representatives in the council, representatives in unions and organizations formed by them close the road before those wanting to nominate themselves and work to serve the council as independent candidates from the Kurdish scene, so we announced that we will not participate in this illegitimate process.”

He indicated that fake organizations and unions subordinate to the Kurdistan Democratic Party are being established, and these organizations and unions nominate candidates to achieve hegemony over the council.

Farhan continued, “we directed a message to the Kurdish National Council and we issued a statement regarding the issue.”

He indicated that, “it is a very delicate stage and the Kurdish National Council is a broad address for Kurds, it must be maintained, and exclusionary mentalities and narrow party interests must be kept away from it, but we must also open up the space for the qualified and independent national figures to play their role to develop the council and activate it.”

The parties and political components opposing the election mechanisms are the Yekiti Kurdish Party, The Kurdish Reform Movement- Syria, Hevgirtina Kime Ez Li Heseke group, independent actors representing the first generation, and other parties and political actors according to Farhan.

The Kurdish National Council is a political alliance where 50% of the members are from political parties, and the remaining 50% of the members are national figures, representatives of youths, women, unions, and coordination councils. The council is considered one of the most important blocks of the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces.
