Northern Sarmin town warmly welcomed rebels left Damascus: fighter

(Eqtsad)- Saeed was unaware of the fate that awaited him when he, like hundreds of other fighters, boarded a bus headed to northern Syria.

The journey from the city of al-Muadamiyat al-Sham to Sarmin city took 24 hours. It exhausted Saeed a resident of Daraya who took his wife and son with him to his exile within Syria.

Saeed spoke to us two days after his arrival in Sarmin, showing his great happiness about the warmth of the welcoming he witnessed. He is still in the rural area close to Idlib city.

“We got off in Qalaat al-Madiq, the last regime held station and then we dispersed into group to different areas such as Idlib, Hizano, Sarmin, Ariha, and Jabal al-Zawiya.”

The 38 buses left al-Muadamiyat al-Sham around 11 in the afternoon on Wednesday and they arrived to the villages and Idlib city around dawn on Thursday.

Each bus carried 45 passengers from the residents of Daraya who were based in al-Muadamiyat in addition to hundreds of fighters and their families from al-Zeyitoun city.

In his conversation with Eqtsad, Saeed said, “the good people gave us homes and the humanitarian organizations handled providing food products, pillows, blankets, and other services.”

Saeed is living in a house provided by one of area’s residents. The house was inhabitable but the kitchen needs a ceiling as it was previously bombed by the regime.

“One of the members of the civil defense came and helped me to build a ceiling from plastic covers and they gave me the support necessary to repair and prepare the place.”

75 Families in Sarmin

Those overseeing the care of the families from Daraya who settled in Sarmin said that most of the families found inhabitable houses or the Civil Defense and the Sarmin Council contributed to preparing them.

The local council in the city clarified that 55 families of the 75 were assigned houses and the remaining families are living in shelter centers in the area until the houses assigned to them are ready.

Abu Bassam, one of the newcomers from Daraya said that they have been provided with many services whether from humanitarian organizations, the Sarmin council, or the area residents whose hospitality must be commended.

He continues that, “they have treated us if we are their families or sons. The city residents are very good and respectful people.”
