Detainees of Tartus Prison demand guarantees to end riot


(Zaman Al Wasl)- A special source confirmed that the regime security forces have posted snipers on the rooftops opposite the central prison in Tartus to target any movement within the prison, and reinforced the security forces surrounding the prison.

The source said to Zaman al-Wasl that the regime evacuated the female detainees in the women’s prison adjacent to the main prison on Wednesday. The political prisoners in Tartus central prison, began the riots on Monday protesting the death sentences issued for detainees.

The regime forces’ latest moves are a feared to be a prelude to the forces breaking into the prison and killing the political detainees inside the prison. Electricity and water have been cut and the detainees, who number over 800, and all those present in the prison are being denied food, according to the source.

The source confirmed that the Minister of Interior arrived on Wednesday to the prison to negotiate, and discuss the detainees’ demands. The detainees demanded guarantees before negotiating with the Minister of Interior. The detainees’ main demands are improving the conditions of detention within the prison, stopping all executions of death sentences, and not referring detainees’ cases to the Military Field Court which generally issues death sentences in the cases referred to it.

The attorney general of Tartus and the chief of police came to the prison on Tuesday where they spoke to the detainees. They exchanged curses and threatened the detainees. The chief of police promised them grave severe punishment, according to the source.

The families of detainees from Tartus city gathered before the prison doors worried about the fate of their children inside the prison in the event the regime security forces attack the prison.
