Latakia: Regime forces arrest 139 people wanted for conscription after Marathon trick

(Zaman Al Wasl)- The Syrian regime's military police and security forces have arrested 139 young men participated in a marathon organized in Latakia last Sunday who were escaping the conscription, sources said.

A source within the military police and supportive to the opposition confirmed to Zaman al-Wasl that the list of people participated in the marathon and wanted for mandatory military service was 418 men, however, only 139 were arrested.

He suspected that the others were relative to influential people or had paid bribery to release them.

The source expected that security bodies were behind organizing the event to arrest as high number of young men as possible for conscription and backup service, especially it came amid an intensive campaign to arrest young men for recruitment by many bodies cooperating with the military police.

The marathon has attracted big number of young men and seduced them by calling girls to participate as well.

The source mentioned that organizing the marathon and the party afterward had caused a wave of anger among regime-loyalists and families of people killed in fighting with the regime.

Latakia News, a pro-regime Facebook page, said the marathon and the party and questioned about the priority in spending money, the page expressed that paying money spent on organizing the marathon was better be given to families of wounded and killed soldiers.

The military police has started few days ago a campaign in the coastal area to arrest young men wanted for mandatory military service, and still till now, where more than 100 young men were arrested.

The regime army who suffers a shortage in manpower due to daily losses has find consolation in thousands of paramilitary militias such as the Lebanese Hezbollah movement, Shiite groups and Iran's Revolutionary Guards.
