Aleppo’s western neighbourhoods witness waves of displacement

Reporting by Manar Abdulrazak

(Eqtsad)- Aleppo's western neighborhoods have been witnessing a wave of displacements due the ongoing onslaught by regime forces and allied militias that resulted hike in prices and shortage in the basic needs.

Om Mohamed, based in New Aleppo neighborhood, reported to Eqtsad that she had left her house after being targeted by heavy shelling and part of it was destroyed.

She mentioned that when clashes reached to the neighborhood, more than 30 thousand people left it, noting that she expected that to happen because logically war cannot keep any area safe.

I have put my house for sale, but due to recession of the real estate market, which forced me to stay in the city, my house’s value is around 50 Million Syrian pound, but the highest offer I received was 10% less than its value”, Om Mohamed detailed.

She is now looking for a way to leave to Turkey, but all her attempts went in vain, she lives now at her brother’s in the regime-controlled neighborhoods of Forqan, hoping that she would be able to leave the city soon.

The opposition military factions have announced a week earlier the Great Battle of Aleppo to break the siege around the Eastern neighborhoods of Aleppo controlled by the opposition, in order to save 300 thousand civilians under siege.

Initial unofficial figures revealed that the battle of Aleppo has resulted in displacing about 200 thousand people from the regime-controlled neighborhoods in Western part of Aleppo especially near the fire line.

In a relevant content, prices in the Western part of Aleppo kept stable especially for food and fuel, as they are still available.

In the same time, neighborhoods of Eastern part of Aleppo, those only dozens of metres away from the western ones, live under hard conditions, lacking minimum living needs and essential requirements of food, fuel and services, and if any found, they are too expensive.
