Hasaka: U.S. forces set up new helipad in PYD-held areas

(Zaman Al Wasl)- The U.S. forces have been preparing a military position in Jabal Abdul Aziz in Hasakah’s western countryside within the Democratic Union forces (PYD) controlled areas. The Democratic Union is the United States ally on the ground in northern Syria in its battle against the Islamic State forces.

Activist Hassan al-Ali said to Zaman al-Wasl, “armed Democratic Union fighters in coordination with the American occupation forces uprooted hundreds of trees in the middle of Maghlujeh tree nursery on the slope of Jabal Abdul Aziz (30 Kilometers west of al-Hasakah) to prepare a helicopter landing pad for military helicopters belonging to the American army and the International Alliance.”

He continued, “they began preparing it a week ago after they uprooted pine trees and other trees with bulldozers to prepare a piece of land in the center of the nursery. The helicopter pad is situation after the cemetery inside the nursery.”

The activist pointed out that a number of American soldiers, whose ranks and jobs remain unknown, came one month ago to the village within an armored convoy of Hummer military vehicles, and they identified the location, but the preparation process only began a few days ago amid heightened security.

The Democratic Union fighters isolated the village of Mahjlujeh, hide their location using large earth fences and wide trenches as well as announcing the area extending to the historical Sakriyeh Castle as a military zone. It is likely they chose a place, “within the nursery as movement cannot be observed there or helicopters targeted when they land.”

Al-Ali clarified that the location which is within the military zone includes the location of a radio broadcasting tower and an old location for the regime forces in the area about 10 kilometers west of Maghlujeh. He added that the Sakiryeh Castle is 5 kilometers away, “al-Ghazlan reservation which is now in the hands of the Democratic Union forces, and Maghlujeh nursery, and the agricultural guidance where the female fighter training camp is located.”

The activist highlighted that Democratic Union fighters dug a trench around the castle using a Packer on the basis they are increasing their fortification of their location as well as setting up an observation tower within the castle.

The American forces had prepared agricultural airports in northern Syria with the aim of using them for military purposes. The airports are close to the villages of al-Hakimet, Robarya (al-Rihit), and al-Javil, but al-Javil received the most media attention as it is known as Rmelan airport.

The United States finished preparing al-Javil agricultural airport after taking over 200 hectors of residents’ land in the environs of the airport, without offering them any compensation, according to a source from the Shamar tribe who spoke to Zaman al-Wasl at that time.
