Clashes in Palestinian city kill woman

Clashes between Palestinian security forces and gunmen erupted in the West Bank city of Nablus Wednesday, killing a woman, medics said, as concern grows over intra-Palestinian violence.

The 39-year-old was said to have been killed in the old city of Nablus, in the north of the occupied West Bank.

The old city has been the scene of repeated clashes in recent months, with Palestinian police carrying out raids to seize illegal weapons.

Four Palestinians, including two police officers, were killed during such raids in August.

Tensions have also been high in the nearby refugee camp of Balata, with politics seen as a factor.

Some analysts say Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas regards the camp as a support base for his political rival Mohammed Dahlan, who is currently in exile in the United Arab Emirates.

During a visit to Balata Monday, U.N. Middle East peace envoy Nickolay Mladenov said he was concerned the West Bank's largest refugee camp could "explode" if intra-Palestinian clashes worsen.
