Lebanon's Future bloc urges solidarity with Syrian refugees

(The Daily Star)- The Future Movement’s parliamentary bloc issued a statement Thursday calling for solidarity with Syrian refugees in Lebanon, state media reported.

“[With regards] to the Syrian displaced brethren, and in particular, the dismantling of some encampments where they are staying without providing an alternative shelter ... they need a humanistic embrace,” read the statement.

The statement seemed to refer to the proposed eviction of the Rayhanieh camp in the northern Lebanon town of Akkar.

The proposed eviction is part of an Army security plan aimed at regulating refugee camps, a security source told The Daily Star.

A Lebanese NGO Saturday criticized the eviction notice issued by security forces, calling it vague and potentially disastrous.

U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees has registered some 1.1 million Syrian refugees in Lebanon, however the Lebanese government estimates the total figure to be closer to 1.5 million.

Five years after the onset of the war in Syria, Lebanon continues to endure the largest refugee crisis in its history.
