Syrian girl tweets she "almost died" after her house was bombed in Aleppo

(Sky News)- A Syrian girl who has shared the horrors of living in Aleppo has revealed her home was destroyed and she narrowly escaped death as government forces battle to retake control of a district in the city.

Seven-year-old Bana Alabed has been tweeting from the devastated city as it is hit by waves of airstrikes and a ground battle that has seen thousands of civilians killed.

But on Sunday, the little girl sent desperate messages to her 94,000 followers as troops loyal to Bashar al Assad made further inroads into Aleppo.

She wrote: "The army got in, this could be our last days sincerely talking. No Internet. Please please please pray for us.

"Last message - under heavy bombardments now, can't be alive anymore. When we die, keep talking for 200,000 still inside. BYE."

Her latest tweet, accompanied by a picture surrounded by smoke and covered in dust, said: "Tonight we have no house, it's bombed & I got in rubble. I saw deaths and I almost died - Bana #Aleppo."

Her plight has attracted the attention of Harry Potter author JK Rowling, who retweeted her messages on Sunday and has sent the little girl ebook copies of the wizard book series.

On her Twitter account, managed by her mother, the little girl has been sharing pictures and videos of the bomb damage in Aleppo for the last two months.

Nearly 10,000 civilians have fled eastern Aleppo towards government-held districts and the Kurdish-controlled neighbourhood of Sheikh Maksoud as Assad's forces close in.

Government forces retook six rebel-held districts over the weekend, after a nearly two-week operation to recapture the city.

Around 250,000 civilians have been besieged for months in the east of the city, facing serious food and fuel shortages.

Since 15 November, the offensive in Aleppo has killed at least 212 civilians, including 27 children, according to the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
