Hand-wrapped cigarette, Syrians’ new source of income

(Eqtsad)- Abo Mohammed, a farmer from Jabal al-Akrad in the countryside of Latakia, used to produce dozens of tons of apples and peach, but now he relies on cigarettes wrapping for a shop in Antakya to earn some money to cover living cost. 
He works for more than 10 hours a day to produce 10 boxes of cigarettes for 5 Turkish lira per a box of 10 cigarette tray. 

Abo Mohammed told Eqtsad that he suffered a lot to find a job suitable for his age, but all went in vain, till a shop owner asked him to do this job. 

“the shop owner give tobacco and papers and filters when he received the boxes I prepared a day before, almost 100 packs of cigarette a day, I don’t like this job, but I have to do it”.


The job of wrapping tobacco with filters to produce cigarettes has spread in many Turkish cities, and it became the only source of income for many of them, amid lack of job opportunity. 

Hand-wrapped cigarettes are sold in Turkish shops for 2 Turkish lira per a pack of cigarette. 

Many Turkish people changed to smoke Syrian cigarettes due to cheap price. 
Tobacco trading is not prohibited, which facilitates their work. 


Most Syrians in Turkey smoke Syrian tobacco as they are not able to afford for the Turkish cigarette, as they save about 100 Turkish lira a month. 

Most Syrians produce their cigarettes, they buy tobacco from market at cost ranges between 15 and 100 Liras according to the city. 


Many people consider Arabic Tobacco less danger from cigarettes produced in factories because they are pure and have no additional materials. 

Dr. Moaz-Ahmad explained that he had changed into smoking hand-wrapped cigarettes because they are less harmful and its ingredients are known without any added materials, but still, it is tobacco and has its bad effects on health, and advise to give smoking up for every one can do that.
