Assad army kills 4 people after shelling mosque in Homs

Four people have been killed and  dozens wounded by Assad army shelling on al-Rawdha mosque in al-Waer neighborhood, during 'Dusk' prayer (al-Maghreb), local activists in the city of Homs said.

The embattled neighborhood has been living under siege since two weeks ago, where more than 500,000 refugees from other districts of the city live in al-Waer, activists reported.

Homs, 140 km (90 miles) north of Damascus, lies at a strategic crossing linking the capital with army bases in coastal regions controlled by Assad's Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam that has dominated majority Sunni Syria since the 1960s.

Syria's conflict began in March 2011 largely as peaceful protests against Assad's rule. It escalated into a civil war after opposition supporters took up arms to fight a brutal government crackdown on dissent.

More than 115,000 people have been killed in the conflict, according to the U.N.'s recent estimate.
