Homemade prosthesis give hope for Douma children


(Zaman Al Wasl)- Ghadir, a young girl from the Damascus northeastern suburb of Douma, had had her right leg amputated by regime’s shelling, in the same time she lost her mother and three brothers. Moreover, after having a prostheses fixed, she was injured by cluster bombs hit Douma.

Ghadir was 12 when she was in a visit with her mother and brothers in family visit, when a rocket launched by regime’s forces hit the building, straight away her mother and brothers were killed, while she was transferred to hospital.

In hospital, the nurse told her about her amputated limb and the death of her mother and brothers, which shocked her and went into a case of unconsciousness for hours.

Ghadir’s tragedy had not stopped at this disaster, after she luckily had a prosthesis fixed, she had severe injuries in her chest and lungs by shrapnels of a cluster bomb hit her father’s house.

Activist Razan Khobiyah, responsible for the “al-Amal” initiative that was responsible for rehabilitation Ghadir, explained that she knew the girl when she was receiving setting of rehabilitation in the centre, she was attracted by her smile that rarely disappear from her face.

She added that Ghadir was a very strong girl, ambitious and confident in herself, despite the pity and compassioning comments she received from people around.
“when I went to visit her after her second injury, I could not hold myself from crying, as I was angry from the brutal immoral regime’s war machine that does not exempt children and injure them without mercy.

Khobiyah mentioned that Ghadir had passed significant stage in treatment, and she has become in better psychological state, and trying to adapt with her new circumstances despite of its difficulties. She added that she had moved to live with her grandmother, and her friends visit her frequently.

In regard to “al-Amal team”, Khobiyah mentioned that team’s members did not give Ghadir special treatment, to avoid giving her a bad feeling, they only observed her and visted her twice weekly since fixing the prostheses to feel that people surrounding her, and the team supported her in teaching to catch up with her friends in schools.

Razan revealed that Ghadir is hard working girl, she once told her that she wanted to become a teacher to become a beloved well known social figure and has good students.

There is more than 1500 case of amputation in eastern Ghouta only, 20% of them are children.
