Hasaka: Lack of fuel increases people suffering as winter gets harsh

(Zaman Al Wasl)- A state of resentment prevailed among the population following sudden increase of fuel prices due to extreme shortage of fuel in the markets in conjunction with a wave of cold and snow hitting the areas of Hasaka province.

Activist Malaz al-Yousef said that the shortage of refine diesel in al-Qamishli area and its southern countryside led to increase in the price. He confirmed that the cut of crude oil supplies in the primitive private oil refineries in the countryside and the objective might be to limit selling fuel in fuel stations subordinate to Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) which controls the area as well as rationing influx of crude oil supplies and demand sponsors from those working in it.

Al-Yousef told Zaman al-Wasl that the price of diesel barrel (200 Liters) reached 14000 SP after it was 7500 SP, pointing out that diesel is not available at the moment in the private stores and it is only available in gas stations subordinate to (PYD) at a time when demand is increased as the area is being hit by a wave of cold with the start of snow falls on Monday.

The activist indicated that diesel is considered main material used in heating, transport, and operating bakeries, water pipes. Hence, the increase of diesel prices created general resentment among the population.

Kerosine disappeared from the markets, too whereas benzene also has been in shortage in the province areas including al-Malkiye, al-Jawadiye, Mabda, al-Qahtaniya, Tal Barak, al-Qamishli and Ras al-Ayn and Tal Tamer.

Abu Ahmad told Zaman al-Wasl that he tried to buy 4 diesel barrels to prepare for winter cold, but it is not available in Ras al-Ayn city. He was only able to secure 2 barrels of unrefined diesel called Aweek because it contains fat proportion and is used for heating only for 11000 SP from a trader in Abu Raseen area.

He added that most people in the area depend on agriculture and livestock and if it was not for the money transfers from their relatives in neighboring countries and Europe, people would not have been able to buy the fuel they need for winter.

In the same context, Hussein, a small shipment car owner, says he waited for a long time in a long queue near one of the gas stations in Ras al-Ayn to get diesel, but diesel run out form the station before his turn came.

He added that diesel is sold in stations subordinate to (PYD) for 100 SP per liter whereas mixed diesel is sold for 75 SP per liter.

The new prices for fuel increased between 40 and 50% compared to the past period. Zaman al-Wasl observed the prices of benzene and diesel according to type in the following.

Ramylan Diesel: the price of barrel increased from 7500-8500 SP to 14000-15000 SP
Diesel sold by (PYD) increased from 11000 SP to 20000 SP per barrel.

Ramylan Benzene: the price of liter increased from 60 to 100 SP
(PYD) benzene increased from 75 to 125 SP
Super benzene increased from 100 to 150 SP
