(Zaman Al Wasl)- Zaman al-Wasl continued in its editorial policies during 2016 to include all Syrian land be it under regime control or areas under control of Syrian resistance by covering developments through a network of editors and reporters who follow one of the fiercest wars in the modern era.
The newspaper during the past year headed the strongest Syrian media platforms (opposition and state platforms) according to a study released by WEEDOO Institute for Studies in Istanbul. The institute is specialized in measuring the reach of Syrian media outlets to audience.
Zaman al-Wasl started last year with the Breach of the Core of ISIS to be the first media outlet around the world to publish a report on the leaked ISIS documents which included data of thousands of ISIS personnel and joiners. The newspaper enhanced this scoop in a series of investigations; putting a lot of this sensitive data under scrutiny. This led to most influential newspaper, websites and broadcasting channels around the world to report from Zaman al-Wasl and to make use of its documents from Australia, Canada, United States, and Europe.
These prestigious media outlets like British The Times, French Paris Match, Spanish El-Bais, Swedish Expressen and others. They used Zaman al-Wasl as main source for their information as the dossier responsible and deputy-editor in chief Ithar Abdul Haq says.
Abdulhaq provided some reports in this regard in the series Breach of the ISIS Core including a report talking about Syrian Baghdadi biography and another report which reveals a personal guard belonging to Azerbaijan president to ISIS. The third report reveals in documents the presence of personnel from different armies including NATO and even Mafia in the ranks of ISIS fighters. The fourth report confirms ISIS personnel use of fake passports.
In conjunction, the newspaper continued working on its huge dossier- on the Lists of Assad-adding to it a group of investigation. The most prominent is the report which explained the Assad oppressive regime in its different facades using accurate statistics from Zaman al-Wasl private archive.
In addition to cross-cutting themes, Zaman al-Wasl focused on several personalities from different affliations and demonstrated its intelligence archive and sometimes the criminal archive if there is like Bashar al-Jaafari and Qadri Jimail, “Syrians who have the name of Hafez al-Assad and Basel al-Assad.”
Zaman al-Wasl also addressed the huge dossier of cement in the world, Lafrage, and the company’s branch in Syria dealt with ISIS. The biggest French newspaper wrote about this dossier indicating our newspaper and Zaman al-Wasl’s scoop achieved through exhibiting some documents and correspondence which proved Lafrage dealing with ISIS.
In 2016, the newspaper kept the intelligence documents dossier open in front of its readers and exhibited new samples of these documents. Some of the documents condemn the regime in the topic of fighters’ influx to Iraq following American invasion in 2003, and another document proved that the “Forty” school in Daraa was not the first school on which anti-regime slogans were written.
Naturally, in addition to the secret files and leaks which made Zaman al-Wasl an information source for the most famous international media outlets, the newspaper did not neglect following the Syrian file where Russian massacres were the headlines. The Russians who continued their intervention for the second year to level up Assad’s loss in Syria in addition to massacres and violations by the sectarian militias coming from Iran and supported by it where the resistance retreated from the most prominent strongholds during the past year. The last of which is the resistance controlled areas in the economic capital of Syria, Aleppo.
The advance of regime forces and its militias by an aerial Russian coverage made the green bus-connected with truce agreements-one of the most important symbols for Syrians in 2016. The bus continued the journey to reach al-Zabadani, Madaya, and Daraya, the icon of the Syrian revolution. The buss passed through Moadamiyet al-Sham, Khan al-Sheeh, al-Tal in Damascus countryside and al-Waer neighborhood in Homs and recently in Aleppo neighborhoods to transport Aleppo population and forcibly displace them to Idlib Province which became the host of those who reject Assad’s rule except for the displaced from Aleppo who chose liberated areas in Aleppo countryside in a scene that manifests one of the most forcibly imposed displacement operations in front of all the International Community.
The Syrian scene finished in 2016 with the last stop of the green bus stations in a comprehensive agreement for ceasefire between Syrian resistance factions and the regime backed up by Russia and Turkey to implement it.
However, the regime and its sectarian militias backed up by Iran, as usual, violated the agreement in many Syrian regions especially in Wadi Barada where the bombings and advance attempts continued until the last hours of 2016.
6 months made Zaman al-Wasl reach to millions
In 2016, Zaman al-Wasl brought a new branch to the organization which is Zaman al-Wasl TV in an attempt to deliver the Syrian event to more followers of social media to be part of an institution which is developing day after day. Zaman al-Wasl works to be the window of Syrians to the world and Zaman al-Wasl continue to work to find the truth and present what is beneficial for people as much as it can.
Zaman al-Wasl TV Managing Editor Ali Eid summarizes the 7-months experience saying, “Zaman al-Wasl administration was not quite sure about the new course of its new platform. The duration between 5 May and December 2016 was supposed to be experimental period and a primary response to serve the Syrian viewer and follow his pressing causes. The administration chose the launch in a simple professional team.”
He adds, “the work started in the idea of humanizing the picture however simple it is. Zaman al-Wasl did not abhor Zaman al-Wasl TV dealing with unprofessional reporters’ cameras including mobile phones ‘cameras to say that the real picture in its truth may not need a complicated industry of photography techniques and its equipment.”
Ali saw that the platform during the short time of work was able to reach to many places to which huge TV stations did not reach, clarifying that taking the principle of human being to be the most important thing in events’ coverage. The platform audience, according to Eid, followed tens of reports talking about the suffering of displaced people inside Syria as well as the suffering of refugees and their disappointments and simple successes.
He added that, “the platform was interested in simple documentaries depending on its big store of documents and diversified its productions between reports in the political, social and economic affairs and even entertainment-sport and arts. It chose to anchor a private experience in the storyboards.”
He elaborated clarifying that, “during the past period and since day one, Zaman al-Wasl TV was able to claim its share of viewers. It started in the first month with half a million viewers to the main website according to the statistics and millions of views on social media websites and continued like that. Some storyboards exceeded million views per one story.”
Eid concluded saying, “we are entering 2017. The experience is anchored and now we can widen the work and its vision, but it has to remain close to Syrians and Syria. It is the most important issue for us as a media outlet which drives its strength from sharing the suffering with every human as well as sharing the success no matter how simple.”
