(Zaman Al Wasl)- A regime-formed spy cell managed to penetrate into rebels ranks in liberated areas, especially in Idlib province, according to leaked audio recordings obtained by Zaman al-Wasl.
The tapes showed voice messages that were sent by agents to Syrian security centers in Damascus.
The recordings discussed an agent by the name Iyad Basim al-Ali recruiting a number of men and women to commit various espionage activities extending between Homs, Damascus and Idlib. The recruitment was the most important part of the in infiltration operation, and al-Ali managed to recruit a collaborator inside Saudi Arabia.
Iyad al-Ali’s identity card indicates that he comes from the al-Zahraa neighborhood in Homs, a pro-Assad stronghold in the city. Born in 1981, he worked as a civilian nurse and his pictures show him working in an ambulance belonging to the Syrian Red Crescent.
In his communications with the intelligence branch, al-Ali revealed the collaboration of an agent name Mahmoud al-Musa. Al-Musa had been working as a regime agent in Jisr Ash Shugur area since the start of the peaceful protests in the area in 2011.
He sent several files to different intelligence branches and political security divisions about the movement of activists during the months of the peaceful demonstrations. He then sent several files about resistance fighters’ movements during the battles for Idlib, especially the battles for Ariha and Jisr al-Shugour.
Al-Ali claimed that there are other sources that are able to provide information about the Free Syrian Army headquarters, the ammunition warehouses, and rocket manufacturing sites in the industrial area. The agent claimed that he could obtain the information through Mustafa al-Halaq and Yusef Qdah.
Al-Ali said that the Central Intelligence Command in Damascus was inattentive to the information he provided them and their neglect led to the resistance fighters gaining control of extensive parts of Idlib.
Regarding the agent in Saudi Arabia, al-Ali said he is in direct communication with a person called Nasser Aqal, an executive manager in a pharmaceutical company in Saudi Arabia and a relative of the agent Mahmoud al-Musa.
Aqal gathers information about persons supporting the Syrian revolution from Saudi Arabia. The last piece of information he provided was about a person called Mahmoud Abdul Karim al-Attar who provides financial and logistical assistance to the rebels. He also mentioned another person called Mazen Marmour who is based in Turkey and according to al-Ali got rockets into Syria from Turkey.
At the end of his communication, Iyad al-Ali mentioned that there are two other agents in Jisr ash Shugur and its environs who are working to reveal the resistance military command meetings locations there.
Zaman al-Wasl will later publish special recordings where al-Ali discusses in detail an operation to recruit women inside al-Nusra Front.
