Firewood prices soar in Idlib countryside

(Eqtsad)- Prices of firewood in the of Idlib countryside have risen due to the recent cold weather conditions, according residents and traders, as it is considered the main source for heating. Firewood prices have risen by 20% to 25% and shortage was noticed in the amount of dry firewood and its prices soared as well.

Abo Hosam, a firewood trader from countryside of Idlib told Eqtsad that he a ton of green olive wood for SYP60,000 while a ton of pine tree firewood is sold for SYP 55.000, but the oak firewood is the most expensive and a ton costs these days SYP 70,000-75,000.

The trader explained that prices of dry firewood, which is rare these days, have risen at the same rate, as the price of a ton of dry oak firewood exceeded SYP 90,000, olive firewood SYP85,000, while pine firewood sold for SYP 75,000 per ton.

Abo Hosam gave Eqtsad details about the green olive firewood stored in his warehouse: “I have bought these firewood from a farmer, he sold me 47 tree for SYP 50,000 for a ton, if we calculated the cost of labor and fuel I will need to sell the ton for SYP 65,000 per a ton”.

The weather conditions have affected prices of Birin as well, the material that is produced from the olive seeds and used for heating.

“Price of a ton of green Birin has reached to SYP 50,000, but it used to be sold for SYP 35,000, moreover, the price of dry Birin hit SYP 70,000 while it was sold for SYP 50,000”, Abo Ammar added.

The market that is located in the area of Bishmaron is the main source of firewood for wood traders, tons of wood come the area of different kinds from sources like Idlib and Latakia countryside to be sold at a wholesale price.

The increase in the prices of firewood and Birin is not unusual because the demand increased on them due to the cold weather this winter, according to Mahmoud, a man lives in the countryside of Idlib

Mahmoud, who was sitting in front of a firewood shop said: “if the snow had not fallen that heavy and broken too many trees, the prices of firewood would have been much higher, and the ton would cost more than SYP90,000”.

Almost 3 million people live in Idlib and countryside, most of them suffer of poverty, low income and the high cost of many essential needs like firewood, fuel, oil, food and sugar.

Compared to last year, prices of firewood this year have increase by almost 200%, where a ton of green firewood ranged between SYP20,000 and SYP 30,000, according to residents of Idlib
