Regime launches major attack to break airport siege in eastern Homs

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Syrian regime forces took ground from ISIS near the besieged T4 military air base after major attack launched on Friday in the eastern countryside of Homs province, activists said.

Backed by heavy aerial bombing and National defense militia, the Assad forces controlled al-Qaryatin road, key supply route to T4 airport.

The radical group said, in return, its fighters had killed at least 15 troops in the clashes.

A senior commander in Lebanese Hezbollah militia was also killed in the eastern countryside of Homs on Friday, sources said.

In the northern countryside, two rebel fighters killed in regime air strikes on Talbiseh in new violation to the nationwide ceasefire took into force on Dec.30.

Also in Homs, Islamic State militants have destroyed one of the most famous monuments in the ancient city of Palmyra, the Tetrapylon, and the facade of its Roman Theatre, antiquities chief Maamoun Abdulkarim told Reuters on Friday.

The regime lost control of Palmyra to Islamic State in December, the second time the jihadist group had overrun the UNESCO world heritage site in the six-year-long Syrian conflict.

UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova said in a statement that the destruction constituted "a new war crime and an immense loss for the Syrian people and for humanity".
