ISIS fighters step up attacks to seize Deir Ezzor airport

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Islamic State on Saturday launched new attack on regime forces southeast of Deir Ezzor military airport, taking advantage of an intense storm sweeping the eastern area.

ISIS fighters who seek to seize the airport used car bombs in hitting regime bastions amid reports of casualties in regime ranks.

In its turn,
Russia's fighters jets have failed to halt ISIS offensive since the radical group has been pounding regime-held areas with mortar shells and pressing slow advances.

Early this week ISIS  took Panorama district at the southern gate of Deir Ezzor city in a surprise attack left dozens pf regime troops killed and wounded, activists said.

Besieged by ISIS since early 2015, the regime-controlled third of Deir Ezzor city is home to an estimated 100,000 people.

Since nine days, ISIS has steadily advanced in a fresh assault on that part of the city, sparking fears among residents of widespread atrocities.

Well-informed sources told Zaman al-Wasl that the regime is sending military equipment and different kinds of ammunition to support the regime and allied forces in Deir Ezzor.

IIyushin II-76 aircraft, Antonov An-26 aircraft and Iranian military cargo aircrafts type C-130 will all be used on the route with the aim of transporting large numbers of the members of Hezbollah militia and the other Shiite militia to Qamishli airport.

In recent days, the regime forces manage to separate Deir Ezzor airport and the 137th Brigade in al-Thardet Mountain from the regime controlled western area of Deir Ezzor city and the village of al-Baghliya and its surroundings.
