Several children deaths reported as cold weather grips northern Homs


(Zaman Al Wasl)- The wave of severe cold recently hit Syria that started about two weeks ago, has increased the incidence of respiratory infections and diseases, and children were the most affected.

In the Northern countryside of Homs a soaring increase in the number of children suffer of respiratory infection was witnessed, as thousands of children were admitted to hospitals, and 4 children died.

Medical sources in Homs reported to Zaman al-Wasl that hospitals and health centres in cities of Talbisa, Rastan and Holeh have admitted more than thousand children within the last 10 days, between 3 month and 6 years of age.

Sources mentioned that most adults' medical wards were turned into children's ones to cover the unexpected number of admitted ill children.

Well-informed sources reported that the hospital of Talbisa has within the last 20 days admitted hundreds of children, most of them suffer of bronchiolitis and acute bronchitis, and some of them had pneumonia. The source add that 184 children were admitted in children ward, 62 in incubation.

A specialist doctor in northern countryside of Homs explained that cold weather plays a significant role in increasing the incidence of respiratory disease especially in children, moreover, the severe cold in the last two weeks when the temperature fell to less than minus 7, had very bad effect on the children immunity and their susceptibility to respiratory ineffective factors.
