ISIS shows stubbornness in al-Bab despite FSA advance

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Islamic State has showed stubbornness on Sunday despite the gains made by the Turkish special forces and Free Syrian Army in its last stronghold of al-Bab in northern Aleppo province.

FSA took new ground from ISIS in the northern neighborhood but its defeat still not clear yet, a press officer in al-Jabha al-Shamiya group told Zaman al-Wasl.

Turkey has been carrying out a military operation in northern Syria since last August. Led by Free Syrian Army fighters, the Operation Euphrates Shield, aims to improve security, support coalition forces, and eliminate the terror threat along the Turkish border backed by Turkish artillery and jets.

The operation has focused on Al-Bab since early December.

"Al-Bab is about to be captured. Manbij and Raqqah are next," President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on  Sunday, adding that Turkey’s priority is to form safe zone in Syria.

"The goal is to establish a safe, terror-free zone of 4 to 5,000 kilometers, and to prevent migration from Syria, and ensure the return of [Syrian] people who live now in our camps.

A Turkish General Staff statement released early Sunday said at least 42 ISIS fighters were "neutralized" in northern Syria in the last 24 hours as part of the ongoing Operation Euphrates Shield.

Turkish authorities often use the word "neutralized" in their statements to imply the terrorist in question was either killed or captured.

In addition, 174 ISIS targets, including the terror group’s shelters, headquarters, defense positions and vehicles were hit by FSA fighters with Turkish Land Forces' support, the statement said.

Turkish fighter jets also destroyed 33 buildings that were used as hideouts.
The Turkish army is supporting FSA fighters in liberating Al-Bab, a strategic city for Daesh, from the terrorist group. Sunday marks the 173rd day since the city was surrounded in order to liberate it.
