(Zaman al-Wasl)- The Fifth Legion, or Faylaq al-Khames, the regime's newly-formed reservists faction, has urged university students to join its ranks to get benefit of a package of merits and money.
The legion leadership distributed their statement on university campuses and on the offices of the National Student Union and banned students from taking the photo because of the mockery that many pro-regime pages made out of the legion.
The statement says that Baath Battalions’ leadership declares acceptance of university students’ volunteers in al-Baath Brigade as the Fifth Legion. The comrade will get paid 200$ and more according to qualification.
Tartus and Latakia News Network received the proposal with irony. Majed Mansour said, “al-Baath Pioneers Organizations declares its desire in recruiting the pioneers in the Fifth Legion for a chips and juice.”
The National Student Union is considered one of the militias which Bashar al-Assad depended on in suppressing protests against his regime in Syrian universities. The members of the union got armed following the outbreak of the conflict.
In November 2016, Zaman al-Wasl launched a new search engine for 66,000 people in Aleppo city wanted for mandatory service. The engine provided names of the youth may their families and relatives take precautions as thousands of youth have been disappeared fearing conscription and detention and of Syrian youth have fled the country to escape conscription.
