Kurdish PYD militia arrests teachers in Hasaka

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Powerful Kurdish PYD arrested several teachers as they and students protested the militia enforcing its education curriculum on their schools in Ghuayran neighborhood in al-Hasaka city on Tuesday.

According to the activist Malaz al-Yusef, armed members of the Democratic Union Party intervened to separate the students and teachers in the Salem Khalef school in Ghuayran in al-Hasaka city. They fired shots into the air to break up the protest, and then arrested the principal and several teachers.

Al-Yusef indicated that there is an ongoing competition between the regime and the Democratic Union Party regarding school curriculum in al-Hasakah. The competition has led to confusion in the education process especially in the districts of al-Shadidi and al-Arisha in the southern countryside of al-Hasakah which lacks any organizations to help in this process.

Zaman al-Wasl obtained a copy of the social sciences book prepared by the education committee of the Democratic Union Party and its Autonomous Administration. The book includes Zaradasht and Manu as prophets alongside the Prophets Ibrahim al-Khalil and Mohammad bin Abdullah (PBUH).

The book concludes with a section on “Pioneering Figures in the History of the Democratic Nation’s Struggle.” The chapter talks about a group of armed fighters in the Democratic Union Party and the militias subordinate to it.

The Autonomous Administration announced the transition of elementary school curriculums in 2016 to Kurdish, and that schools must use of the curriculum issued by the Administration. This curriculum is used to teach in 1500 schools which include 165,000 students who are overseen by 10746 teachers. The Autonomous Administration trained these teachers in 12 centers regardless of their qualifications amid fear among residents about their children’s future educational options at high school and university level due to the changes in the new curriculum.

Armed members of the Democratic Union Party took control of three Arab neighborhoods in al-Hasaka in August 2016. They are the neighborhoods of Ghuayran, al-Nashwa, and al-Zuhour after confrontations with the regime forces and its militias in the city.
