ISIS attacks US-backed Kurdish forces east of Raqqa, kills 8

(Zaman Al Wasl)- At least 8 fighters from the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces killed by ISIS in the eastern countryside of Raqqa city, the group's news agency said Thursday.

The US-backed SDF continues to push to gain ground in eastern al-Raqqah. As part of its efforts in the Wrath of the Euphrates military campaign, the Democratic Union Party (PYD) forces, part of the Syria Democratic Forces, continue to arrest Arab men in al-Raqqah’s northern countryside to conscript them as fighters against the Islamic State.

The Islamic State announced via Amaq News Agency, it's official media apparatus, that eight members of the Kurdistan People’s Party (a reference to the Democratic Union Party) were killed and two members were injured during an Islamic State forces attack on al-Sahmiyet village in eastern Raqqah.

Local activists confirmed that the Islamic State forces launched isolated attacks on several SDF locations in the villages of Goran, Sabah al-Khier, and al-Sahmiyet in the administrative border area between Deir Ez Zor and al-Raqqah.

In other news, the ‘Raqqah Post’ website announced the International Coalition, which supports the SDF with aerial cover, targeted an area close to the al-Kaniset roundabout in the city of al-Tabaka which adjoins the Euphrates Dam with highly explosive rockets.

Meanwhile, fighters from the PYD continue their search and arrest campaign of Arab men in the areas in al-Raqqah’s northern countryside. They want to conscript the men as fighters against the Islamic State within the Wrath of the Euphrates military campaign which began in November 2016 and continues.

Speaking to Zaman al-Wasl, local activist Mustafa Mohammad said, that the mandatory conscription campaign has reached men in the areas of Sulok, Tell Abyad, and Ayn Issa. Mohammad indicated that many of men under the age of 30 are now trapped in their homes for fear of arrest and conscription. The activist mentioned that there had been several incidents in these towns where the Military Disciplinary Unit saw young men in the local market or elsewhere and they chased them and even shot at them to arrest them.

A military source confirmed that the men in all the towns and villages controlled by the SDF militias were conscripted in the first and second phase of the ongoing military campaign against the Islamic State.

The detained men are moved to training camps in the areas of Ayn al-Arab in Aleppo’s eastern countryside, and Ras al-Ayn in al-Hasakah as the SDF fear the Islamic State forces will target the training centers in al-Raqqah.

The SDF announced the graduation of 132 recruits after they completed a 15-day training course in Faisal Abu Leila camp in the Ayn al-Arab area at the end of January 2017. According to the SDF records, 2500 recruits from al-Raqqah graduated from five similar previous military courses held by the SDF in cooperation with the International Coalition.
