Syrian rebels take new ground from regime in Hama

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Syrian rebels pressed new gains on Tuesday, taking a village and two checkpoints northeast of Hama city after a week of surprise offensive allowed them to take remarkable territory in the northern countryside of the central province, activists said.

The attack is being led by Tahrir al-Sham, an alliance of Islamist factions dominated by a group that was formerly al Qaeda's official affiliate in the Syrian civil war. Groups fighting under the Free Syrian Army banner are also taking part.

Al-Qaramteh checkpoint and and Tel Sakher village fell to rebel control after heavy clashes, activists said.

"The battle - praise God - has been prepared for a long time and all capacities have been prepared for it so that we can waged a long battle," said the FSA commander identified as a lieutenant in the Ezza Army group.

Meanwhile, more than 40,000 people, mainly women and children, have been displaced by fighting in Hama countryside, the United Nations said Tuesday.

Since the offensive began in the area a week ago, people have fled south and west to Hama city and to other towns nearby and in neighboring districts including Homs, Latakia and Tartous, the United Nations said.
