Regime forces launch major attack on Halfaya in Hama province

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Syrian rebels thwarted a major offensive by regime army and its allies on the town of Halfaya in central Hama province, activists said Sunday.

Pro-Assad Sputnik news site said Bashar al-Assad's forces backed by aerial and ground bombardment seek Halfaya capture to push rebels to the borders of Idlib province.

Two weeks ago, rebels pressed gains in the northeast countryside of Hama city after a surprise attack allowed them to take remarkable territory in the northern countryside of the central province.

The attack is being led by Tahrir al-Sham, an alliance of Islamist factions dominated by a group that was formerly al Qaeda's official affiliate in the Syrian civil war. Groups fighting under the Free Syrian Army banner are also taking part.

Meanwhile, more than 40,000 people, mainly women and children, have been displaced by fighting in Hama countryside, the United Nations said.
