Assad, Russia's warplanes kill 20 civilians in ISIS-held areas

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Syrian regime airstrikes on ISIS-held areas northeastern Syria, have killed at least 20 civilians, including family memebrs, local monitoring group and activists said Tuesday.

The strikes hit the village of Dibsi Afnan near Tabqa city leaving 16 people, including 8 women, dead.

Residents told Zaman al-Wasl that regime warplanes had conducted more than 100 raid on the ISIS-held town this week.

Four more people from the village were killed in Russiana airstriles, local activists said.

The village lies to the east of Aleppo countryside where the regime army launches major offensive to take the nearby town of Maskana, taking advantge from the rapid gains in Tabqa by the unspoken ally the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces.

In relevant development, U.S. President Donald Trump has approved the supplying of weapons to Kurdish forces battling ISIS in Raqqa, a US official said Tuesday.

The official did not specify what kind of weapons will be provided, but they will be used in the upcoming fight to recapture the ISIS bastion of Raqqa.

The funding "to provide support to the YPG has been approved," the official said on condition of anonymity.

"The approval is effective immediately but the timeline for weapons delivery is to be refined."

The issue of whether to arm the Kurds has been hugely contentious for the Trump administration, as such a move is sure to infuriate ally Turkey, which considers the YPG as terrorists.
