As starvation mounts rebels slaughter lion instead of cats

Rebels posted photo online showed 3 men slaughtering a lion in the besieged Ghouta suburbs, east Damascus; they  try to 'make a virtue of necessity', activists said.

Zaman Alwasl source said the old lion came from the embattled Douma Zoo in Damascus countryside.

Months ago, Islamic clerics cited Fatwa to eat cat and donkey’s meat to face the systematic starvation by Basher al-Assad on the besieged towns and cities in Syria.

Few days ago, fierce fighting to the east of Damascus as Syrian rebels struggle to break a months-long blockade by forces loyal to Assad, activists said.

It began on Friday when rebel units attacked a string of military checkpoints encircling the opposition-held suburbs in an area known as Eastern Ghouta, which has been under siege for more than six months.

An estimated 120,000 people have been killed and more than 2.5 million displaced by Syria's civil war, which erupted after a fierce government crackdown on pro-democracy protests first held in March 2011.
