Syria’s Opposition to form committee for women within Coalition


 

A draft for a project to establish a “Women’s Committee” within the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces has been drafted. Zman Alwasl has obtained a copy of that draft, which has been signed by 19 members of the coalition, including the Head, Ahmed Jarba, Secretary General and the secretary of the political body.

The wording of the executive suggestion for the project for the mentioned committee as following:

Forming the Woman’s Committee within the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces

Aim:

To reach to a complete and fair participation of women within the coalition and its directorates at all levels, including decision making, as it is an important part of the democratic civil society.

 

Execution plan

To establish an independent committee to determine recommendations and follow up their implementation. The committee will coordinate with the coalition leadership and the political body to apply the following:

 

1- Appointing a female consultant at the decision making level to support women and ensure their share and participation in all political, social and economical levels, including the coming transitional stage and afterward. This position will go in line with the Syrian identity and needs determined by the head of the coalition. Members in the committee will be chosen in coordination with the coalition.

 

2- Determine quota for women’s in all political bodies, the aim is to reach to at least 30% proportion of women within:

• The transitional and execution bodies at experienced and skilled levels and above.

• General assembly of the Coalition

• Local councils

• Other committees and organizations of the coalition.

 

3- Increase awareness of women’s activities and highlighting the work and efforts Syrian women do inside the country and abroad, especially in the media.

 

4- Expanding the coalition network through working with other organization, directorates and communicate with people, and other women’s organizations in Syria with mutual memorandums of understanding if it is feasible.

 

5- Form a working team within the committee to:

• Enable women to make decision and improve their skills in strategic planning, communication and leadership skills, to increase their political voice, through training and workshops.

• Chose the skilled and experienced women for all fields.

Identify other men who support the project.

• Start other initiatives with other bodies and activities to create new thoughts about enhance the role of women and their participation in building Syria.

 

Budget

• Independent sources from countries in the United Nation and non-governmental organization interested in women’s issues and have programs to integrate women in political process, will support the committee.

• The National Coalition would not hold any responsibility to look for, distribute or allocate money to any part of the Women Committee office.

The Women committee will stay independent within the coalition

To ensure transparency and questioning before the supporting bodies, the Women’s Committee would not be able allowed to forward its fund to any other committee in the coalition.

It worth mentioning that Hadi al-Bahra, the secretary of the political body within the national coalition, has commented on the news when it was first published and has highlighted the point in regard the mentioned documents and stated that documents which Zaman Alwasl obtained were no more than a draft for a project suggested by the Political Body within the national coalition in Washington office, to be discussed in next meeting the political body is going to hold. Therefore, Zaman Awasl, has amended the news accordingly.
