(Zaman Al Wasl)- The number of displaced persons in the Qana refugee camp in the southern countryside of al-Hasakah has risen to 1,200 with tens of families continuing to arrive via Markada from Islamic State controlled areas in Deir Ez Zor province.
Zaman al-Wasl’s reporter in the area said that most of the newcomers are sleeping in the open air without shelter as they wait to be allowed to continue to the border region with Turkey or for tents to be distributed to them. There are only 60 tents in the camp which are insufficient to shelter the residents and newcomers. Our reporter added that the United Nations High Commission for Refugees proposed setting up collective tents, some for women and others for men to accommodate the newcomers. This model was implemented close to the notorious Rajm al-Salibi checkpoint.
The camp administration sent 40 patients with their companions to receive treatment in Damascus, while those who remain in the camp, established by the Democratic Union Party (PYD), experience extremely difficult humanitarian conditions due to the lack of shelter, services and assistance. The assistance is restricted to the International Relief and Development (IRD) organization distributing 50 food baskets in cooperation with the Syrian Red Crescent.
Over the first two days of Eid, groups of displaced persons arrived at the camp in buses accompanied by members of the Democratic Union Party. They arrived after crossing from the direction of al-Shadida coming from al-Mayadin, al-BuKamal, Hatala, al-Qawriya, al-Matla, al-Jarthi and Markada town in south al-Hasakah after the Global Coalition, Russia and its allies increased their aerial bombardment on these areas.
It is noteworthy that the Kurdish administration subordinate to the Democratic Union Party has detained hundreds of displaced people coming from Deir Ez Zour over the past two week in a camp set up near al-Hasaka’s southern dam (al-Basel) amid fears that the camp will become like al-Houl and al-Mabrouka camps which aim at preventing displaced persons from continuing to al-Hasakah city or its northern countryside.
