Assad's army arrests top general over corruption claims

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Syrian military intelligence has arrested M. General Sulaiman al-Salama, head of the army's supplies directorate, over corruption allegations, the second top general to be arrested in a month, source told Zaman al-Wasl on Sunday.

Corruption has never been a stranger to the Syrian state, as it exists in every state sector, institution, ministry and especially in its judicial sector, according to al-Araby al-Jadeed.

This corruption witnessed and known by every Syrian is nothing compared to the corruption that occurred when the Syrian Revolution began. It opened new doors for corrupt, especially for military officers.

Activists said the anti-corruption campaign followed a Russian advice to Assad to lessen the anger of his loyalists and families of slain soldiers.

On July 7, the Officers Security Branch (293), with direct order from Bashar al-Assad, had arrested M. General Abdel Basset Loki, the head of Missions administration over fake deals and the embezzlement of $80 mn.
