Syrian regime airstrikes kill 5 people in Eastern Ghouta

(Zaman Al Wasl)- At least 5 people have been killed in Eastern Ghouta suburbs as Syrian regime forces and allied militias intensified their bombardment on rebel-held region near the capital, two days after rebels frustrated a regime attempt to advance, activists said Wednesday.

The strikes on Kafr Batna left 5 people killed, including children, Civil Defense, local rescuing group, said.

On Tuesday, the bombing on Ein Tarma and Zamalka also left 3 people killed , including a civilian defense worker, residents told Zaman al-Wasl.

Air strikes on the towns in Ghouta scattered debris amid thick clouds of rising dust, as seen in footage posted by the group Tuesday on social media.

Activists said more than  15 surface-to surface missiles had pounded Ein Tarma and Zamalka.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said rebels killed nine soldiers and captured at least one in fighting Monday. It said the bombardment continued Tuesday.

In its turn, Failaq al-Rahman, key rebel group fighting regime in Ghouta, said it had ambushed army’s elite forces in Ein Tarma, leaving 10 soldiers killed.

Parts of Eastern Ghouta are protected by a cease-fire agreement. The regime has largely targeted areas held by rebel factions not party to that agreement.
