(Zaman Al Wasl)- Seven rebel factions operating under Elite Forces in northeastern Syria have joined the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces, according to a statement issued on Friday.
The factions which mostly formed by tribesmen have defected from the Saudi-backed group led by Ahmed Jarba, the former head of Syrian National Coalition.
Two weeks ago, the U.S. army has deployed troops in a territory controlled by the defected tribesmen north of Deir Ezzor province.
Meanwhile, Ahmed Abu Khawla, head of the Deir al-Zor military council which fights under the SDF, told Reuters the assault might begin "within several weeks" in parallel with the battle for Raqqa city.
The SDF alliance of Kurdish and Arab militias has been fighting to seize Raqqa from Daesh with the help of airstrikes and special forces from the U.S.-led coalition.
