Opposition Govt appoints batch of army defectors in newly-formed Defense Ministry

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Jawad Abu Hatab, the Prime Minister of the Syrian Interim Government and the acting Defense Minister has appointed Col. Abdul Jabbar al-Ukaidi as his deputy, according to a statement issued on Monday.

The prominent commander in the Free Syrian Army was appointed along with Col. Hassan Merei al-Hamada as deputies of Defense Minister.

12 more colonels were appointed in the newly-formed Joint Chiefs of Staff who represent most rebel-held areas in Syria.

Two weeks ago, more than 44 rebel factions, including the prominent Islamist group Ahrar al-Sham and Turkish-backed rebels, agreed to name Abu Hatab as the Defense Minister amid efforts to create a single "National Army" to unify the fractured opposition movement.

The idea was proposed earlier this week by the opposition's interim government in exile and by the Syrian Islamic Council (SIC), a body of Syrian Muslim clerics established in 2014 in Turkey, AFP reported.

The interim government said the unified structure would "bring the downfall of the criminal regime".

Abu Hatab was appointed in 2016 as Prime Minister of the Syrian Interim Government. Prior to his election as Prime Minister he worked as a heart surgeon and served in various roles within the Syrian opposition

Since Syria's uprising broke out in March 2011, its various rebel components have tried and failed several times to form a lasting, unified front against Bashar al-Assad. (With AFP)
