Lebanon appoints Saad Zakhia as Ambassador to Damascus

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Lebanon has officially appointed Saad Zakhia as its ambassador to Damascus, such a move welcomed by the Syrian regime and sparked outrage of Syrian activists.

Last July, The Lebanese government recommended Zakhia to be its ambassador to Syria.  The step seemed as a sign of diplomatic victory for Bashar al-Assad after 6 years of isolation.

Zakhia to hand over his credentials to Assad during the week.

The Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri and the President Michel Aoun have come under activists' fire for signing the decree of appointment, accusing both of 'normalisation' with a criminal regime killed half million Syrians.

Farah Nabih Berri, the chargée d’affaires and the daughter of Lebanon's Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, to deliver her office to Zakhiya on Sunday.
