Bin Laden materials reveal links between Qaeda, Syrian Intelligence

By Ethar Abdulhaq

(Zaman Al Wasl)- The US Central Intelligence Agency published on Wednesday Abbottabad documents found on the computer seized in the May 2, 2011, U.S. raid on the Al-Qaeda founder’s hideout in Abbottabad, Pakistan, such material reveal contacts between al-Qaeda and the Syrian regime.

A computer recovered in the 2011 U.S. special forces operation that killed Osama bin Laden contained a video collection that included kids’ cartoons, several Hollywood movies and three documentaries about himself.

The CIA published documents found in bin Laden's personal computer as large 18 GB. The documents tackle various and complex topics. First, we are concerned with the Syrian issue. 23 documents deal with the Syrian issue and were the focus of attention and follow-up of bin Laden personally to the extent that he kept them on his own device.

These documents include analytical articles, studies and letters from prominent figures in the "jihadist current", and the latter – the letters - are the most sensitive as they reveal in some aspects things that were only to be circulated on a small scale.

Among these documents several letters were addessed to Abu Basir al-Tartousi, the jihadist leader called Abdul Moneim Mustafa Halima. The letter has clear tone to the apostacy of al-Nusairi regime and the necessity to confront the regime. We will publish excerpts from the letter later on.

The most dangerous document is a letter written in the fall of 2007 that was circulated from one person to another to deliver it to Abu Hamza al-Muhajir, the right-hand man of Ayman al-Zawahiri who succeeded Abu Musab al-Zarqawi In Iraq before becoming a deputy to Abu Omar al-Baghdadi, leader of the Islamic State of Iraq which borne ISIS. ISIS that turned the scale of events in Syria.

In the letter addressed to al-Muhajir, the sender called Abu Basir speaks of the dangerous situation in the Ein el-Hilweh refugee camp in Lebanon and the catastrophic fate awaiting the camp which may face similar scenario to Nahr al-Bared Camp which was almost completely destroyed under the pretext of fighting an organization called Fateh al-Islam led by a person named Shaker al-Absi.

The first part of the letter focused on the deteriorating situation in Ein el-Hilweh and the second part talks about “brother Abu Assem and Syrian intelligence."

The second part of the letter literally says, " The brother Abu Assem al-Urdni and I think you know him. I saw him in Falluja before the events of the second battle.

The important thing is that he left Iraq for Syria with a smuggler but he was captured by Syrian intelligence. About a month ago, a person contacted one of the brothers and told him he was sent by Abu Assem and gave him some important signs that confirm he was sent by Abu Assem. He said that Abu Assem wants to help you and started to send this brother emails and that Abu Assem needs help us and that he is in great trouble and he and many brothers and that there is away to get out of this dilemma. After several emails, we asked him to tell us how much the amount required to set him and the others free.

He replied that it is not a money problem and that Syrian intelligence wants to negotiate with al-Qaeda and he claimed that the negotiations were initiated by Sheikh Abu Musab, may Allah have mercy on him and the Syrians wanted to follow the negotiations. So we asked him to clarify more. He sent a message that says the Syrians do not want stability in Iraq and they are ready to do anything anything anything (repeated three times) in return for the international tribunal to try the murderers of former Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri. And that if there is someone who comforts them they would do everything he wants (this last paragraph is in bold and broad line). He mentioned in particular that al-Qaeda has many prisoners in Syrian prisons. He said that they said to him: "What can you help us with like Shaker al-Absi?" In the letter, Abu Assem warned us not to leak this subject and stressed that saying: Do not do anything until you tell me. Leaking will destroy me and no power except God. "

This excerpt reveals what has already been confirmed in various documents and from various sources including Zaman al-Wasl exclusive report about the infiltration of jihadist organizations and manipulation of jihadist members by Syrian regime. And even the success of regime in recruiting some jihadist memers to serve in mutual benefit deals. The regime uses jihadist detaineæes to pressure their leaders and their knowledge in order to implement certain things (document recalls the stability of Iraq and the disposal of the Hariri court, in exchange for the threat of the release of many al-Qaeda detainees at Assad intelligence.
