9 militiamen killed in clashes with ISIS in Syria desert

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Nine militiamen loyal to Bashar al-Assad were killed on Tuesday in clashes with ISIS in the Syrian desert, local activists said.

Despite the victory declaration against the extremist group in Syria, ISIS militants still control swaths of territory in the Syrian desert, also known as Badiya.

More than 500 militiamen fighting under The Tiger Units were killed and wounded in a month of fighting with ISIS in Deir Ezzor province, source told Zaman al-Wasl.

At least 12 regime soldiers were killed and wounded on Monday when a group of ISIS suicide bombers blew themselves up in a military checkpoint in the desert town of Sukhna east of Homs province, the state news agency SANA said.

The attack came day after 17 troops killed in similar attack on Ma’danan town in the Syrian desert, also known as al-Badiya, where the radical group still control a territory.

More than 119,000 pro-government forces have been killed, including 62,000 Syrian troops, tens of thousands of loyalist militiamen, and 1,556 fighters from Hezbollah, according to a new estimate by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Syria’s grinding war has killed over 340,000 people since it broke out in 2011, including more than 100,000 civilians, according to the Observatory.
