Jaish al-Izza kills 18 fighters loyal to Assad in Hama province

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Pro-regime media outlets mourned 18 troops, including two officers, said they had been killed by rebels in a surprise attack in the northern countryside of Hama province.

8 of the slain fighters were operating in a Palestinian militia loyal to Bashar al-Assad.

Jaish al-Izza, key Free Syrian Army unit, attacked regime checkpoint late on Sunday, pressing slow advance. 6 soldiers were also taken captive, sources said.

The regime army and Iranian-backed militias backed by Russian air power  have made gains in northeastern Syria, stepping up a military campaign against Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and FSA in Hama and Idlib.

The Islamist alliance and Jaish al-Izza in control of these areas said they were sending reinforcements to seize back a string of villages in the northeastern Hama countryside.

Captain Mustafa Ma'rarti, spokesman for Jaish al-Izza, told Zaman al-Wasl that his rebel group on Sunday launched attack on regime forces in the northern countryside of Hama, taking a village and number of checkpoints.

For two weeks, dozens of Russian airstrikes hit opposition-held villages and towns in the northeastern Hama countryside and the southern part of Idlib province.

At least 6 women and 4 children, mostly family members,  were killed in Russian airstrikes targeted the southern countryside of Idlib province, local media unit said on Sunday.

The deadly strikes on Khan Sheikhoun town came as regime forces entered parts of opposition-held Idlib, one of four “de-escalation” zones which foreign powers including Turkey, Iran and Russia agreed to establish after years of civil war.
