Southern Front to boycott Sochi's Syrian Dialogue Congress: statement

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Southern Front rebel alliance said in statement issued on Sunday it will boycott Russia-brokered Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Sochi at the end of January.

The key rebel group in southern Syria said Russia seeks to keep Bashar al-Assad in power, ignoring the principles of the Syrian revolution that erupted almost seven years ago to overthrow Damascus dictator from power as well to retain freedom and dignity to the Syrian people.

Raed al-Radhi, commander of al-Fallouja Division, told Zaman al-Wasl that Southern Front had accepted a political solution on contiond of achieving the demands of Syrians according to the in Geneva resolutions where Assad has no role in the transitional period.

On Saturday, the Russian Foreign Ministry said it is preparing the list of participants at the Dialogue Congress.

As per new boundaries set by the ministry, the Syrian opposition must set aside the notion of removing al-Assad from office in order to participate at the congress.

According to Al-Arabiya News, the ministry also said that they will not allow Sochi to become an arena pro-Assad leaving. Continuation of the former only supports the opposition’s desire to continue an armed conflict, the ministry added.

The ministry also reaffirmed UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura’s invitation to the congress while noting the possibility of the US’s participation, but only as an observer.

President of the Syrian Opposition’s Media Hub Ahmed Ramadan said on Saturday that what Russia is attempting to impose is a challenge to Syrians and the world.

Deals that oppose the decisions of the international community and the demands of the Syrian people must not be passed, he added. (With Al-Arabiya)
