(Zaman Al Wasl)- The Syrian regime in northeastern Hasaka city reached a new understanding with the Democratic Union Party (PYD) aims at neutralizing the city’s university and its faculties from all conflicts and disputes.
Mahmoud al-Ahmad, Hasaka-based activist, said the education process will resume in the faculties of science, agriculture, dentistry, education and arts as of next Tuesday.
The understanding came due to a pressure from the Council for Kurdish Tribes in the Syrian al-Jazira on the PYD running the Autonomous Administration. Al-Ahmad indicated that the Council communicated with Najm Hamidi, the Director of al-Furat University branch in al-Hasakah and representatives of the Kurdish administration.
Al-Ahmad explained that the regime agreed to reopen the universities to students, provided that the so-called Youth of Rojava association subordinate to the PYD withdraws from the faculty buildings and closes their two offices in the university buildings which sparked the dispute last week.
Al-Furat University suspended classes indefinitely in the faculties of science, dentistry and agricultural engineering as well as postponing examinations for students in the faculties of education and arts because of the Youth of Rojava interfering in the faculties’ affairs according to a source from among the academic staff.
The source added that what it described as aggression on the faculties can be considered a violation of the written agreement signed by the Kurdish administration and the governor of al-Hasakah last year. That agreement dictates that the university and its faculties will remain neutral in any conflicts and disputes that occur, all signs of military and armed struggle will be eliminated from the university including security personnel who are appointed by the university president.
The Democratic Students Movement subordinate to the Kurdish Autonomous Administration considered that the administrators’ position, the closure of its rooms in the faculty buildings and the university administration’s decision are political decisions that are unrelated to scholastic affairs. The movement added that it would stand firmly against these decisions because no one owns or inherits the university.
In its statement, the student movement demanded that university officials stay away from politics and focus on teaching. The statement continued that it is unreasonable to close or move a university to another province because of the behavior of a single individual whether that entailed opening an office or breaking the lock on another office as these issues are tangential and worthless. The statement added that there is no need to amplify the issue in this method.
Last week, the faculty of science at the Al-Furat University, forced the regime government to postpone the practical examinations for its students after a dispute with PYD administrative officials in the faculty building in Musherifa neighborhood in northern Hasaka. The disagreement expanded to include all the faculties that are under the PYD control in the city.
