5 civilians killed in Ghouta as regime forces step up aerial bombing

(Zaman Al Wasl)- At least 5 civilians killed Saturday in deadly airstrikes on besieged Eastern Ghouta suburbs, Civil Defense agency said.

The leading rescuing group said 4 people have been killed in Hamouriyah suburb as the aerial and ground bombing extended to Douma and Harasta suburbs east of the capital.

The death toll included  Mohamed Bweidany, a Civil Defense volunteer, who was killed in artillery shelling on the city of Douma.

The number of people killed in Eastern Ghouta reached a total of 200 after three weeks of regime and Russian bombardment, according to local activists and monitoring groups.

Regime forces backed by Russian warplanes began a campaign to take the rebel-held district on December 29, relying mainly on artillery barrages and air attacks.

The Syrian Observatory for human Rights, which gathers details of casualties from a network of sources inside the country, said on Friday that those killed in the latest escalation in violence include 51 children and 38 women.

Eastern Ghouta, which has been under siege by pro-government forces since 2013, is home to close to 400,000 people.

The four-year siege has led to a major humanitarian crisis, with severe food and medicine shortages.
