Bashar al-Assad to grant general amnesty due to Russian demand

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Well-informed sources told Zaman al-Wasl that regime president Bashar al-Assad will issue a decree granting a general amnesty to opposotion detainees over a Russian demand.

Russia is pressing on the Assad regime to show a good-will sign ahead of the planned peace talks in Astana and Geneva since about tens of thousands of Syrians are still behind bars and the intelligence basements, sources said.

On February 7, the Justice Ministry formed a committee to review special amnesty, a Damascus-based lawyer told Zaman al-Wasl.

News of the amnesty came as army forces  backed by Russia stepped up aerial and ground bombing on the eastern enclave of Damascus and northern Idlib province.

About 5000,000 Syrian have been arrested since the revolution erupted in March 2011, according to local monitoring groups.
