Assad's security aide visits Italy

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Bashar al-Assad's first aide is on a 'security visit' to Italy following a two-year of collaboration between Rome and Damascus in the Intelligence and jihadists issues, a Lebanese daily said on Monday.

The Hezbollah-funded Al-Akhbar newspaper said the Lebanese Security General Abbas Ibrahim had brokered the visit of General Ali Mamlouk.

Italy refused two months ago to receive the head of the Syrian National Security Bureau since he is on the International sanctions list and on the U.S. black list over war crimes and killing senior Lebanese officials.

Mamlouk flew to Rome in Italian private plane where he met with the Interior Minister Marco Minetti and the director of intelligence.

Mamlouk is said to be one of the founding officers of the Syrian Air Force Intelligence in the 1970s. He was deputy director there, when in June 2005 al-Assad appointed him head of the General Security Directorate.
