Tribal figures broker reconciliation deal in Deir Ezzor

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Tribal figures loyal to Bashar al-Assad have intensified efforts to mediate a reconciliation agreement in former ISIS-held areas in the eastern countryside of Deir Ezzor, following a calm between the militant group and US-backed Kurdish militias, sources said.

15 figures from the eastern bank of Euphrates River crossed to regime-held areas this week to negotiate a reconciliation deal where hundreds of people who fled ISIS areas seek to settle their situation, sources told Zaman al-Wasl.

Syrian regime and key ally Russia have been using reconciliation as tactic, taking advantage of rapid gains and a general state of disappointment amid residents after seven years of devastating war.

The borders of ISIS has shrunk in Syria and Iraq to be a small pockets after fall of Raqqa, the de facto capital, Deir Ezzor and Albu Kamal.

ISIS is still controlling small pockets at the Iraqi border amid unspoken truce with the Syrian Democratic forces.

Graneej, the last town seized from ISIS, has made the whole al-Sheitat region under the full control of Kurdish-led militias.
