Germany charges Syrian asylum seeker over bombing plot

German prosecutors said Thursday they had charged a 20-year-old Syrian asylum seeker with preparing a bomb attack in Germany aimed at killing at least 200 people.

The man, identified only as Yamen A., is suspected of having planned and started to prepare an militant attack involving explosives after researching the matter on the Internet and starting to buy components and chemicals he needed.

The suspect, who had applied for asylum in September 2015, had intended to kill "as many people as possible," but at least 200, and to injure a lot more by targeting a large crowd, prosecutors said in a statement.

The concrete date and location of the planned attack remained unclear.

He appeared to be a supporter of the Daesh (ISIS) group, had taken up Daesh ideology since the middle of last year and aimed to create a climate of fear and insecurity among the German population, the statement said.

The suspect, who was given leave to remain for three years in 2016, was arrested in October and charged on March 5.
