Some 3,000 Syrian refugees in Arsal look to return: Mayor

(The Daily Star)- Thousands of Syrian refugees in the northeastern town of Arsal have registered their names to return back to Syria, the town’s mayor said Monday.

Bassel Hujeiri confirmed to The Daily Star that a list with the names of 3,000 refugees looking to return back home was finalized.

“The names were registered and confirmed around two months ago,” Hujeiri said, adding that they are still waiting for a final answer over the matter. He noted that those who registered were looking to return to Western Qalamoun areas.

“We presented the list to General Security chief Maj. Gen. Abbas Ibrahim,” Hujeiri said.

Last week Ibrahim announced that there were thousands of Syrian refugees in Lebanon willing to return to their homes, adding that there have been contacts with the Syrian government in this regard.

In April, hundreds of Syrian refugees from Lebanon’s Shebaa Farms left in buses headed to Syria’s Beit Jin, 10 kilometers east of the Lebanese-Syrian border.

Lebanese leaders have been repeatedly calling for refugees to return to areas in Syria they deem safe – a move they argue is feasible as pro-Assad forces continue to win decisive victories across the country.
