Newly-returned refugee killed in western Qalamoun: activists

(Zaman Al Wasl)- A newly-returned refugee to western Qalamoun from Lebanese Arasal town was killed by assailants on Monday, such a crime may rise fears of thousands of refugees who believe that the situation is still not secure to return back, activists said.

Three armed men opened fire on Hassan Awdeh, 35, in his town of al-Meshrefah in the western Qalamoun region. 

Activists said the crime was due to vengeance acts.

Lebanese General Security said last week that 377 refugees had returned to Syria, in a voluntary return. 

Most of the refugees are from the western Qalamoun region, according not Zaman al-Wasl reporter.

Thousands of Syrians are unable to return because their homes were destroyed in the fighting, or because they region fear military conscription or retribution from regime forces.

But the tough retractions and mounting arrest campaign by the Lebanese security have pushed hundreds of refugees to move back home as fighting there subsides.

The Syrian regime has called on refugees to return, saying it has successfully cleared large areas of "terrorists," according to AP.
 
Syrian refugees in Lebanon have called on the UN refugee agency to protect them from the abuses of Lebanese security that uses the identity of UNHCR employees to delude refugees in its latest arrest campaign.

Lebanese officials have accused the UN refugee agency of deliberately discouraging refugees from returning.
