The Russian military has downed a drone targeting the Hmeimim air base in Syria, Russian news agencies reported on Thursday.
The drone, launched from territory controlled by Syrian rebels, was detected on August 9, RIA reported.
Russia Today said the Russian air defenses in Syria had shot down drone, that was approaching the Hmeimim air base from rebel-held territory.
Shooting down drones has become somewhat of a routine for the Russian forces stationed in Latakia province. Over the past month the Russian air defenses have neutralized at least 25 drones approaching Hmeimim armed with various types of explosives.
On Thursday, another UAV was spotted on approach, and the target was successfully shot down by the air defense systems at a safe distance from the base, the head of the Russian Center for Reconciliation of opposing sides in Syria confirmed, RT reported.
Russia’s Hmeimim air base operates as normal,” Maj. Gen. Alexei Tsygankov said. “There were no injuries or damage.”
