Syrian court sentences doctor to 3 months over tweet criticizing Erdogan

(Zaman Al Wasl)- A court run by Turkish-backed forces in the northern town of al-Bab has sentenced a doctor to three months in prison and fined him 5,000 Turkish liras for a tweet criticizing the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his statements, that threatens legal action against the residents and displaced people of the northern areas of Syria such as “Tal Refa'at” and ”Manbaj Meng”, “Deir Jamal” and its suburbs.

Dr. Mahmoud Al-Sayeh told Zaman Al-Wasl that he had previously been arrested for the same charge and was forced to pay 5,000 Turkish lira to President Erdogan. He added that he had stood before Judge “Ahmad Al-Shibli”, who interrogated him on the first session of the court, to find out later on, to his surprise, that “Al-Shibli” had relinquished the case to Judge “Ahmed Al-Nuaimi”, He continued: "During the course of the aforementioned case and after I was released, three days before Eid al-Fitr, on a bail of 1,000 Turkish lira, I was invited to the court on more than one occasion”. He persuades, that each time he stood before the court, he was not confronted with the Turkish prosecutor, who is the Commander in chief of the Turkish forces and the representative of President Erdogan in the region, "Khalid Coltan", instead, he is represented by a court paper stating his legal status.

Although, Al-Sayeh’s cabin's address was accessible as well reachable, he didn’t receive any invitation to attend the hearings -which proceedings took a long time-, but was informed of the issued verdict, instead, while reviewing the court and through a policeman of the court who asked his to appeal within ten days maximum.

Al-Sayeh” born in 1970, from the northern areas of Aleppo, studied medicine and orthopedic surgery at the University of Aleppo, was arrested by the Assad regime several times on charges of criticizing Bashar and his sectarian system, alongside issues related to his participation among the supporters of the 2003 Iraq's event. He was released from the State Security detention center in late 2009. He was one of the pioneer supporters of the revolution, mobilizing, assembling, and organizing men to volunteer for the work in the field hospitals, traveling along the Syrian territory from “Damascus” to “Ras al-Ain”, in order to rescue the victims of the Russian bombardment in “Idlib”, the very same attacks that killed 14 members of his family, including his wife and seven children. He himself, remained under the rubble fighting for his life, only to end up behind bars on charges of insulting the Turkish president.

In his turn, activist "Aslan Hassan" emphasized that the arrest of Dr. “Mahmoud al-Sayah” are but a merely fabrication of false and unfair accusations by the court of “Al-Bab” and its sponsors. Even though, the accusation of “ Insulting the Turkish president” , is not classified as a crime in Turkish law , It is falsely fabricated by the court of “Al-Bab” .
