Regime halts salaries of teachers refused reserve service

(Zaman Al Wasl)- The Syrian regime has suspended salaries of hundreds of teachers in northeastern Syria who refused to join the reserve military service.

Mahmoud al-Ali, teacher, told Zaman al-Wasl that salaries of 705 workers in the Education Directorate of Hasaka province, including 581 teachers, had been halted after one month notice.

Bashar al-Assad's regime now controls nearly two-thirds of Syria and is determined to reassert its authority over Kurdish-held territory, which forms the lion's share of the rest.

But Kurdish leaders and their supporters are desperate to salvage what they can of their painstakingly built institutions.

Meanwhile, Assad's forces have been massing for days around northern Idlib province near the Turkish border and look poised to launch what could be a last major battle in the war that has torn Syria since 2011.
