Kurdish PYD launches arrest campaign in Raqqa

(Zaman Al Wasl)- Powerful Kurdish PYD militia launched major arrest campaign tracking Arab residents in the eastern province of Raqqa, local activists said Friday.

The Kurdish Democratic Party units backed by the domestic Asayish security stormed the city of Tabqa on Thursday, where tens of locals were arrested.

The campaign followed attacks by unknown assailants on the Kurdish fighters in the last few weeks. Zaman al-Wasl sources said more than 20 Kurdish fighters were killed in the scattred attacks.

The Syrian regime now controls nearly two-thirds of Syria and is determined to reassert its authority over Kurdish-held territory, which forms the lion's share of the rest.

But Kurdish leaders and their supporters are desperate to salvage what they can of their painstakingly built institutions.
